Safety Culture at Workplace is an Attitude. (Blog)

Safety Culture is very important at workplace. Without safety culture accidents increase and safety of employees is at risk. Successful safety culture requires commitment from each and every employee. One should practice safe behavior always.

As an organization effective safety culture should fall into place. It all begins with an organizations commitment towards employee safety. It is very important for management and higher officials to get involved in safety culture and make sure that their team gets involved too.

As the blog headline says that Safety Culture at Workplace is an attitude. Do not implement it as rule rather, it as an Attitude.

Safety Culture decreases accidents. But before understanding safety culture lets us discuss some of the factors that are responsible for accidents at Workplace :

  • Improper machinery
  • Workplace not designed properly
  • Equipment used were not proper
  • Machinery was not serviced on time
  • Employees were not following the Standard Operating Procedure
  • Employee operating lacked required skills
  • Employee was under the influence of alcohol
Above are only some examples and likewise there could be many possible reasons.

Now, we will discuss three major factors that can play major role in setting up Safety Culture at Workplace.

  1. Clear Communication
  2. Training
  3. Assessment

Communication plays major role. It is important that clear and effective communication is passed. Communication should be clear. It is very important for Employees to understand what safety culture and why is it important. Next important step is training that is another key element in creating safety culture. It is very important to identify the training needs and deliver the same. Training is a way to educate, motivate and ensure safety of employees. Assessments are equally important to know the effectiveness of the training. Never ever be afraid of safety audits. It measures the efficiency of the processes and how well are they implemented?

Another factor that effect the Safety Culture is RIGHT ATTITUDE.

What is Right Attitude?

No matter how much time you invest in making Standard Operating Procedure, imparting training, what matters is are your employees willing to learn and accept new changes. Nothing can be implemented is Employees do not get involved.

Let us do a Case Study.

Scenario 1 : Ramesh is an employee who operates machine at his company. He has been working on it from last 6 months and one day his newly joined supervisor told him that the way he operates the machine, it could lead to accident someday. Therefore, his supervisor organized a training class. But Ramesh did not like as he was working on machine from last six months and the newly appointed supervisor who just came few days back was telling him the right way. In presence of supervisor he followed the operating procedure but in his absence he continued the same way as he used to because it took less time.

Scenario 2 : Suresh who had completed five years in the same company was operating the same machine which Ramesh did. Suresh was doing evening shift when the supervisor told him that the way he operates the machine, it could lead to accident someday. He attended the same training class which Ramesh did. Suresh understood the importance of safety while operating the machine. He followed the operating procedures in absence of supervisor too.

In scenario 1 employee followed right operating procedure only in presence of supervisor. That's because safety was a rule for him rather than attitude. Whereas in Scenario 2 Suresh understood the importance of safety and developed it as an attitude. Safety was in his behavior.

Training can play major role as it is very important to motivate employees in right manner and also it is important to acknowledge the right attitude towards Safety Culture. Identifying the training needs is very crucial. This brings me to a very important point, it is not alone the Supervisor who needs to understand the importance of Safety rather it is very important to build right learning attitude in each and every employee. Because mistake in any safety process by one employee can be dangerous for many.

Another aspect of Safety Culture is revising the policies at regularly or as and when required. In case of accident, it is very important to find below:
  • Were procedures in place to deal with accident
  • Cause of accident
  • Was the employee trained
  • Was the employee authorized to use machine
  • If there was defect in machine, why was it not serviced on time
Also, it is very important to understand you team. Observe their behavior as it can help to impart right training. Develop a check list and educate your staff. Know you team, their strengths and weaknesses as group as well as an individual. Once safety culture is implemented it is very important that it affects everyone positively.

Job Scams : Recognize them. Don't fall to the trap. (Blog)

I manage a Facebook page @hoteljobsbyvoyagecreating where I post job openings for hospitality. Since the page has been created I have received many messages requesting me to find them jobs abroad.I am sharing two experiences below :

Experience 1: I approached three candidates telling them that I have a job opening in India at various locations and asked them to send the resumes if interested. I did receive the Resumes. After conducting the interview I told them that there would be registration charge of 2000 INR.

I was glad that none of them came back to me.

Experience 2: I approached another three candidates telling them that I have a job opening in Dubai but they need to pay 50,000 INR as the registration fee. Without any question, they were ready to pay.

Being ambitious is good, but you need to understand the fact that there are many fake job offers floating in the market.

Do not fall for such offers. Recognize a job scam.

1) No one will ever ask money to hire you. Companies pay salaries to their employees, they do not ask money. Reputed companies pay consultancy fee to consultants. Remember the golden rule do not pay.
2) Research on your own. Visit website. Compare the email ids and contact numbers.
3) No company will offer you job using Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail etc email ids. Every reputed company has their own corporate ids. Also, check the spellings if received an email from id that seems company's corporate email id. Sometime scammer create email ids looking similar to those of the company, with a small spelling difference.
4) The email is unprofessionally written.
5) Offers are made without interview. It is a scam. Every company interviews it's candidates before hiring.
6) Scam emails do not have Landline number many times. They add mobile number instead.

Read the below offer letter that I have received on my Gmail id.

My Inspiration for Positive Approach in Life : Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. (Blog)

For this post I decided to use my Facebook profile picture. Today's blog is about the man I admire," Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam"

Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam born on 15th October, 1931 was the 11th President of India. Born and raised in Rameswaram, he studied physics and aerospace engineering. Popularly known as Missile man of India, he was referred as "People's President". On 27th July, 2015 while delivering lecturer at Indian Institute of Management Shillong, he collapsed. He died because of cardiac arrest.

Whenever I feel demotivated and negative, I find positive energy reading his quotes and speeches.

"Determination is the power that sees us through all our frustrations and obstacles. It helps in building our willpower which is the very basis of success" - Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam

In December, last year I decided to start writing the blogs on training and development. I was not sure if I would be able to write or will I get views. I really wanted to write the blog as training is my passion and writing, a hobby. Whenever I do not feel confident I go to Dr. Kalam and without fail I find my inspiration each time.

"Courage is about doing what you are afraid to do. The one who feels no fear is a fool and the one who lets fear rule him is instead a coward. We must have courage to act instead of reacting"-Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam

That day I realized that fear is not bad but it cannot stop me from being who I am and what I want to do.

"Do not wait for something big to happen start where you are with whatever you have." -Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam

That's how I started writing blogs and encourage myself with quotes by Dr. Kalam.

Recently, I attended an interview which I did mention in my blog Blog about Woman's Career. I felt frustrated. But then I read, "Use the difficult situation you are facing to tap into your spirituality and built upon it to achieve something meaningful."- Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.

He was a scientist, statesmen, teacher, president and a very good human being. I had never met him personally but he is my teacher who has taught me the way to live my life. Though, he is not in this world but he continues to show right path to me and many more.

There are many quotes by him which continues and will always inspire and show path to me. One of the quotes by him that has always inspired me to never give up is :-

"Failures will never overtake me if my definition to succeed is strong enough." - Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam

Life has many shades, failures and success is part of it and what I learnt from Dr. Kalam is," Life is a very complex interplay of various factors and there has to be acceptance of the risks inherent in copying with it and yet keep moving on."

He is my inspiration and I still follow him and will follow forever. I have learnt never to lose hope and more importantly I have learnt to dream. He may not be alive but his thoughts will continue to inspire. His life is a perfect example of never give up.

Are You Guilty of Degrading Others? Read This. (Blog)

Life is beautiful and we are lucky to have one. Being loved by all is the most wonderful feeling. We all want to be loved or let me re-phrase it, we all want to be Popular. As kid we all want to be the most popular in school and wanted to be loved the most by our parents. That's when we start comparing ourselves to others, gossiping and make fun of our own friends or classmates and soon we start degrading others just to show how popular or how beautiful/smart I am. "I" is the most selfish word that one can use.

"I want to look the most beautiful."

"I am the most popular person in my school."

The one letter "I" is a word in itself and it becomes so big that we start disrespecting and degrading others. Being alive is one of the biggest battle that we all are fighting and winning each moment. Most of the time we forget that just to show how big "I" am we degrade others, hurting them.

I was an average student who was more of an introvert. I remember once how one of my teacher commented that, "This year even average children have scored well." I still member when my 10th board results were announced, I and my father were celebrating that I scored 70%. Though some might say that it was not a great percentage but my father was happy. It did not bother him who scored what. What mattered to him was that his daughter scored 70%. I was standing near to notice board when the comment was passed by one of the teachers who knew my mother well. The teacher who passed that comment might have forgotten it but I still remember it. However, later on I realized that there are many people who find happiness in degrading others. That was just the beginning as life was much tougher ahead.

People don't only talk about others but also try to break others. They keep reminding you of your failures and the worst part is they will not stop here, they will rate you as well. There are people who become so mean that degrading someone makes them feel great.

Life isn't fair and it will never be fair. We are so busy making it perfect that we forget that it can never be perfect. We need to realize no matter what life has been and always will be beautiful. We all have our own social circle, personally as well as professionally. We have to face many challenges and some situations change our equation with people around us. Our social circle may consist of of our family members, best friends, close friends, colleagues, neighbors and so on. Our equation differ from person to person. Some may like us and some may not.

Some of the possible factors affecting equations in Social Circle could be

  • Difference or Similarities of thought.
  • Jealousy
  • Competition
  • Attraction
  • Personal Reasons
  • Superiority Complex
  • Inequality
  • Insecurity
What is degrading?
Degrading in simple words is humiliating others.

However, it has been noticed that many people find good by degrading others and sometimes degrade people who like them. Let's ask few questions before moving further.

Are you degrading people around you? Do you bully people? Are you hurting others? Are you commenting at others?

Putting some down to make you feel bigger is the worst thing to do. Building up your confidence is great but degrading some else's confidence is not a grate thing to do. Sometimes, in a group of friends we start to joke about someone and then take it to extreme level hurting an individual.

Why? What is the need?

No two people are same. Being respected is great feeling but respecting others make you feel even better. Before writing further I am going to ask you another question.

Why to degrade others? What do you gain?

Life is very unpredictable, we do not know what will happen the next very moment. As I write I can recall, it was a normal morning and my father was going out of station for some work. He used to frequently go out driving on his own. That day also he got ready and I stood at the gate looking at him go. Something inside me was telling not to let him go. But he went as he had to and destiny had its own plan. The same day after few hours he left, we got a call from someone saying that my father met with an accident while driving. On reaching the hospital I, found my father was fine. There were no external injuries however, he was still admitted in the hospital for recovery. He was there for fifteen days and was recovering well, until one day suddenly he started bleeding  and was rushed to another hospital and after three days he succumbed to an internal injury that was not detected in hospital earlier. Three day back, he was recovering well and that day he was lying motionless in front of me. He left to the unknown world. Many years have passed and I still remember how full of life my father was. Even in hospital he would always tell me, " Don't worry I would be fine, we will go home soon."
We did return home but he was not there. Life is so unpredictable. You never know what is in stored for us. Respecting your life and others life is very important. You cannot become big by degrading or gossiping about others. Before writing forward let us clear one thing that Gossiping is not gender based. Many times gossiping is a trait that is tagged to females but we fail to talk about the main issue that gossips and degrading others is a bad habit. We have no right to talk about anyone's appearance, life, career or anything. It's none of your business. Never talk ill about others. The people who degrade others are weak  and to hide their weakness, they point fingers at other. Degrading others don't make you strong. Believing that you are superior to others is the worst trait to possess. Those who point fingers at others are insecure and non-confident about themselves. Confidence is good but over confidence will ruin you.
Making fun of others is not funny, it is pathetic. It does not talk good about about you. The best way to live your life is with respect. Self-respect and respecting others is important. Life is beautiful and realizing it is important. We as parents, its our responsibility to teach our children how precious and beautiful life is.
As I conclude, please remember living respectfully is important and degrading others is will harm you as well, if not today than in long run. Degrading other is not the trait of strong.

Stay strong and lead a positive life. Degrading others will not make you bigger.

Tips for Successfully presenting a Presentation. (Blog)

Presentation is an important skill. It is not only an ability but also an opportunity to develop new skills. The entire presentation can be divided in 4 parts:

  • Preparing Power-Point
  • Navigating Power-Point
  • Delivering
  • Feedback
Public speaking is never easy and it can be nerve racking if you are not a confident speaker. With changing time the working style is changing too. Power point presentations are one of them. Before writing further let me admit that every time I go to the stage, I get butterflies in my stomach. This is mainly due to anxiety. But, I don't allow anxiety to stop  me. I take a deep breath and start my session.

Here are quick tips to make your presentation successful.

  • Preparation of Power point is an important part for a successful Presentation. No short cuts please, because research plays an important role. Clarity of thought is very important.
  • Do not write long descriptions on your slides. Identify the main points and these are to be later explained by you.
  • Do not read out your presentation to the audience.
  • Give accurate data in your presentation. Do not misguide.
  • Use slide designs carefully.
  • Ice- Breaker is very important.
  • Engage your audience
  • Never underestimate knowledge of others. Go well prepared.
  • Practice is very importance to build up your confidence.
  • Know your content well
  • Do not memorize, understanding your content is important.

  • Welcoming has to be strong. Start strong.
  • Using pictures, charts or graphs in your presentations make it interesting but don't overuse.
  • Ask questions.
  • Let your audience ask questions.
  • Include few interesting activities.
  • At no point get negative.
  • If you don't know answer to any question. Do not give false answer. Get back to them, after you find the right answer.

  • Do include some examples in your conversation but do not comment on religion or any community. Use examples to support your points. Tell inspiring stories and incidents.
Relax, don't take too much stress as it can have negative effect on your confidence.

Use enthusiasm to control stress. Be strong and respect the fact that not many get this  opportunity. Love your work and your audience will love what you speak.

5 Quick tips, when you make mistake at work. ((Blog))

Everyone makes mistakes. Do not allow it to cause any damage. Before any damage is done, correction of the mistake is what you should aim at and if mistake cannot be corrected, damage control should be done. There are two situations that can arise when a mistake happens from you.

  • You make a mistake and you realize it and can either correct it or control the damage.
  • You make a mistake and you realize it when damage is done.
In both the cases, we sometime go defensive and start giving excuses, thus worsening the problem. Sometimes you can correct your mistake and sometime you may need help of someone. May be help from your boss and that's when things become tricky. When damage is already done correcting your mistake may not been an option.

Feeling bad about the situation is fine. But, with upset mood you cannot solve the problem instead add more problems to current situation.

Here are 5 Quick tips to handle the situation.

1) Stay Calm:

Surely, it does not feel good when you make a mistake. Whole office might be talking about it, you might become an example of what not to do, even worse your boss may shout at you in front of other colleagues. Take deep breath and do not over think. Situation might not be favorable, but anxiety can destroy can make situation worse. Tell yourself to stay calm. Take some time and do not get carried away, that you made a mistake. Do not worry about it too much. Mistake is done and now it's time for you to act and solve the problem that you created. This can be a situation that might work in your way. Show your problem solving tactics here. But, before that calm yourself as you do not want to make another mistake here.

2) Admit your Mistake :

Do not make excuses. You realize that you made a mistake, be bold about it and accept it. It shows that you are not only professional but you take ownership rather than making excuses. It demonstrate that you are strong

3) Don't point fingers at others:

Be bold and do not be scared of accepting your mistake. Admitting mistakes shows you are strong and point fingers are other displays your weakness. Mistakes happen, they do but do. Don't hide your mistake because if you do and some day it comes out it will not reflect good on you. Don't play the blame game.

4) Learning is an important tool

Learning is very important and plays a major role. Making mistakes help you to to learn but make sure you don't repeat your mistakes again and again. Understand, the mistake no matter how big don't let it damage your career. Lessons learnt today will stay with you forever.

5) Be a problem solver

Now that you have realized your mistake, you have accepted it, taken ownership and learnt from your mistake. It is time to be a problem solver. If your company understands the importance of an hard working, passionate and sincere employee, they will definitely consider you. Don't go with the problem to your boss but go along with a solution too.

6 Tips for Successful Career this Year. (Blog)

2018 has finally arrived and so the New Year resolutions. However, in this blog I will discuss about career growth as I am sure many of you would have it on your list. Whether you are a Fresher or looking for new job, make sure that you add below points to your career check list for successful career.

Cover Letter:

Add cover letter to your resume. Or at least have detailed but to the point mail body while sending the resume. Grammar and Spellings to be checked before applying.

Dear Sir,

Greetings!!!

Please find the attached resume.

Warm Regards
XYZ

Please do not send resumes to recruiter like above. Rather include a cover letter and write about the Position applied for along with thanking in anticipation and give very brief introduction about you.

Resume:

Be professional while building your resume. Remember some basic points:
  • No Fancy Fonts
  • Font Size Matters
  • Don't Make Colorful Resumes please
  • Check Your Resume Length. Don't write it too long or too short.
  • Read before interview and know what you say and what's written in resume. It should match.

Job Posting:

Yes! They are hiring but there is a criteria. Before applying read the job posting carefully. Read the requirement, job profile, offered CTC, key skills and experience required along with others details.

Develop New Skills:

Polishing your existing is a great idea but developing the new skill is even better. Do not wait for your employer to conduct training for you. Self- learning is a great tool.

Know About Company:

Do not leave your current job just because the other employer is paying you more. Do a referral check because job is much more than a salary hire.

Follow Up:

Just don't wait them to call back. Take follow up if they do not get back to you after telling that they will call back. Just don't give up because you were not called. Take a follow up to know the result.
